SEW (Supporting & Empowering Women) is a development organization that employs HIV+ women in Arusha, Tanzania. In Africa, it is difficult to find a job once infected with HIV/AIDS, due to the stigma associated with the disease. To address this, SEW has the simple aim of providing secure and meaningful employment.
Our employees are paid a fair wage, and receive their full entitlements under Tanzanian employment law. The organization currently has nine sewing mamas – Halima, Happy M., Oliva, Jasinta, Hadija, Happy N., Asinati, Suzana and Albina . We also have a Ugandan work-shop manager - Janet.
SEW produces hand-made, recycled carry-bags and conference bags for sale locally and abroad. We have provided conference bags for Oxfam and The Bill and Melinda Gates foundation, charity fund-raising bags to the World Food Program, and gift-bags for The University of Melbourne. We are currently filling a large order of Orientation Week “O-Week” bags for the University of Waikato in New Zealand. Our reach is far because our products are brilliant and our development concept is simple.
Over the past 3 years, SEW has become a stepping-stone for financial independence. This has been achieved through sewing skill training, financial literacy classes and English classes. The women are also undertaking nutrition classes. As a social enterprise business, our aim is to treat our employees as equals, and award them their full rights and entitlements as a member of the formal workforce. The women have worked hard to improve their skills, and as a result have worked themselves out of poverty. They have themselves to thank - The SEW team have merely provided the business framework.
For legal reasons, SEW has split into two organizations. SEW Tanzania is a company under Tanzanian law, which pays taxes and abides by all regulations of Tanzanian labour and company law. SEW Inc is the major distributing arm, is an Incorporated Association under Victorian law in Australia.
This project was started by two Australian University students with the help of a wonderful Australian and American living in Arusha. Only the Tanzanian and Ugandan sewing-mamas receive wages, with the balance of SEW’s team working as volunteers.
How can you help? Buy a bag! We don’t need donations, but like any other business we rely on our product to generate income. Please visit www.sewtanzania.org or email firstname.lastname@example.org for more information or to place an order.
